Heartburn is a common item of discussion in Women’s Health. Heartburn most often occurs after consuming a large meal or while lying down, and it can last anywhere from just a few minutes to a couple of hours. Despite its name, heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It is actually a burning feeling that exists in the lower part of the chest and a bitter or sour taste in the mouth and throat.

What causes heartburn? When you are eating, sometimes the opening between the esophagus and stomach does not close all the way after the food passes through. This will cause reflux to occur and stomach acid to irritate the esophagus, resulting in heartburn.

Although heartburn most often occurs after overeating or while lying down, other causes of heartburn include stress, pregnancy and certain foods. Other common heartburn causes include: smoking, coffee (and other caffeinated drinks), alcohol, citrus, tomatoes, chocolate or mint, fatty foods, spicy foods and onions.
So now that we know the causes of heartburn, let’s talk about ways to avoid them. The best way is to make healthy changes in your lifestyle, such as quit smoking, lose weight and eat healthy foods, especially those high in protein. You can also make sure you eat at least two to three hours before sleeping or lying down. If you nap during the day, try doing so in a chair. Also, avoid tight clothes and avoid any foods that may provoke your heartburn.
If you experience heartburn every now and then, it is probably not very serious. On the other hand, if your heartburn symptoms are frequent, you may get esophagitis, which is when the lining of the esophagus becomes inflamed. Severe esophagitis will cause your esophagus to narrow, and you may experience trouble swallowing and bleeding in the throat. Be sure to contact your physician if these symptoms occur.

A common aide in lessening the symptoms of heartburn is antacids. Antacids help to neutralize the acid within your stomach and can be purchased over the counter. They provide fast, short-term relief for heartburn. However, if antacids are used too often, they may cause constipation or diarrhea.

Next time you experience heartburn, be sure to refer to this Healthy Food Secrets article for ways to lessen the symptoms and even prevent them in the future.
